Berlin, Germany.... The New Paris?

bayeux tapestryBerlin might rightly be called Germany’s phoenix, as it has had numerous calamities and fascinating reinventions since its beginnings in the 12th century. Embracing industry and commerce early on, a real powerhouse during the Industrial Revolution, Berlin perhaps inevitably became Germany’s capital, despite its eastern location, just 30 miles from Poland. With wealth came art, and a cosmopolitan acceptance of those fleeing turmoil in other parts of Europe, most notably in the 18th century when French Protestants arrived in such numbers as to make up 20 per cent of the population. The French cultural mark lives on in architecture, nightlife and a fashion forwardness in Berlin unlike anywhere else in Germany.

The end of World War II and the agreements with the armed and still-threatening Soviets as to the disposition of Eastern Europe saw Berlin partitioned, with West Berlin an island of democracy in the East German state. The Berlin Wall stood as a cold reminder of totalitarianism’s power, until its fall in November 1989. What’s left of the wall is a must-stop for visitors.

Night life, food, avant garde art and an irresistibly bustling atmosphere mark Berlin as a premier European destination for sophisticated and neophyte travelers alike.
